Different Effects in Apple Motion

There are different effects available for us to use in Apple Motion. 360 video effects, Distortion Effects, Tile Effects, Time, etc.

In this lesson, I will introduce the overview of the effects in Apple Motion and how to use them. Some effects are simple to use while others need a little bit of tweaking. So sit back and enjoy the lesson.

The filters or effects can be accessed into two different ways. First is using the Library Panel and second the Filters Icon.

As a beginner, I recommend you to use the Library Panel because you can have a preview of the filter.

The first category on the list is the 360o filter, this filter is for 360 videos.

Blur Category consists of different effects. Inside the blur category, we have the Channel Blur, Compound Blur, Directional Blur, Gaussian Blur, Gradient Blur, etc. Different Blur filters provide different results, the most common blur we use is the Gaussian Blur.

Next on our list is the Border Category. There are only 4 filters inside Border Category, they are quite interesting to use. I commonly use the Stroke filter especially for text. Later on in a separate lesson, I will show you how I use the Stroke Filter on a text.

After the Border Category, we have the Color Filters Category. The Color Filter Category contains a lot of filters for manipulating or changing a color of a layer. We have the common filters such as the Hue & Sat filter, Color Curves, Color Wheels, and Threshold.

The Distortion Category comes after the Color Category. Inside this category, there are different filters that can make your animations look really cool and interesting. You have the Fisheye effect, the Page Curl Effect to achieve that opening and closing of a book, Underwater filter to simulate a view through water, the Bump Map Filter which is quite my favorite, can be used to deform an image, with parameters to control the amount of displacement.

Glow Category according to Apple, it combines blur with brightness and color effects. The results are automatically recomposited over the original image in various ways. Glows can be used to simulate film effects, as a method to render your footage more abstract, or as accents to make elements in a composition stand out.

The Looks Category is similar to picture effects available in Photobooth. However, it includes cinematic color grades, such as Bleach, New York, and Chrome. Most of the time, I only use the Mono Filter in this category.

Mask and Keying Category consists of Green Screen Keyer, Luma Keyer, Matte Magic, and Spill Suppression. This category is useful when you have a project with a Green Screen. If you want to remove the Green Screen from your subject you use the Green Screen Keyer.

The Sharpen Category in Motion consists of only two filters, The Sharpen filter and the Unsharp Mask filter. I have been using Motion for some time already however I don’t usually use the filters in this category.

The filters inside the Stylize Category are used to simulate different media, such as film, television, or print. I commonly use the Bad TV filter to achieve that retro television look wherein there are some wavy lines across the screen and sometimes some distortions along the edges. There are 27 filters inside this category and some of the most common filters I use are the Bad TV, Add Noise, Crystallize, Extrude, and Fill. I urge you to play and try the different filters under the Stylize Category and see which suits your project.

Third to the last in our Filters is the Tilling Category. The Tilling Category converts images, shapes, text, and other objects to geometric patterns. There are 8 filters inside here and as for me, I commonly use the Offset and Tile filter.

The Time Category contains five filters namely, Echo, Scrub, Strobe, Trails and Widetime. Each filter produces interesting results. When I first started learning Motion, I did not pay that much attention to this category. However, these days, I mainly use the Strobe Filter to achieve stop motion like animation.

Lastly on our list is the Video Category. In this category we can only see two filters, first is the Broadcast Safe filter and second the Deinterlace Filter.
